This week we will be focusing on an instructional approach called project-based learning. In traditional teaching, teachers largely give lectures and ask students questions about the lecture material. But in project-based learning, students acquire and demonstrate knowledge and skills by working on a course-related project, typically with other students. Before our class tomorrow, I'd like your opinion: Do you think project-based learning is more effective at promoting learning than the traditional teaching? Why or why not?

I find the traditional lecture method to be more effective because the information students need to know is given to them directly. In project-based learning, students need to find their own topics and rely on themselves to get information and they might end up missing important information about the topic.

I think the process of project-based learning is more effective at helping you develop useful skills, especially interpersonal skills that can be helpful in your career. You can even list the projects you have worked on when applying for a job, which should impress potential employers.

  • In my opinion, project-based learning is more effective at promoting learning. This viewpoint aligns with Kelly’s argument that it helps students develop useful interpersonal skills and boosts career opportunities. I would further argue that project-based learning fosters critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which are essential for real-world success. To be more specific, by working on projects, students face open-ended problems that require them to analyze information, evaluate alternatives, and create innovative solutions. These skills are less emphasized in traditional lecture-based methods, where students passively receive information rather than actively engaging with it. For example, my cousin Ethan participated in a group project in high schoolto create an eco-friendly product for a science class. His team had to research, design, and present a sustainable innovation, which sharpened his ability to think critically about environmental challenges. This hands-on experience not only deepened his understanding of the subject but also taught him how to collaborate and solve complex problems. To conclude, project-based learning’s emphasis on critical thinking and active engagement makes it a more effective teaching approach than traditional lectures. It prepares students not only academically but also for real-world challenges.
