This week, we'll be discussing the future of education. Let's focus now on the following viewpoint: it is no longer useful to spend many years pursuing a traditional, specialized university degree in a single field, such as communications or economics.Instead, it makes more sense for most people to complete several shorter certification programs and earn certificates in, for example, project management, computer programming, graphic design, and so on. Do you agree?

l agree that completing short certification programs makes alot of sense these days because people are more likely to change careers now than they were in the past. Certification programs allow people to quickly learn a variety of professional skills that are in demand at the moment. And acquiring such skills leads to more job opportunities.

I see the advantages of earning certificates, but I don't think that they can completely replace university degrees.Certification programs provide only superficial knowledge, while university degrees offer a well-developed and organized approach to studying. By pursuing university degrees, students gain foundational knowledge and a broader understanding of their field of study and develop many skills as well.

  • In my opinion, pursuing a traditional university degree is a better choice than completing several shorter certification programs. This idea supports Kate’s argument that university education offers comprehensive learning. I also believe that university degrees provide unmatched networking opportunities with peers and professors, which can have long-term benefits for both personal and professional growth. To explain further, universities create a unique environment where students can interact closely with experienced professors and build relationships with classmates, who may become future colleagues or collaborators. These connections often lead to internships, mentorships, and career opportunities. For example, my cousin Ethan, who earned a degree in computer science, formed valuable connections during his university years. His professor, impressed by Ethan’s dedication and skills, introduced him to a senior manager at a tech company, which led to his first internship. Furthermore, Ethan’s group project partner later started a successful startup and invited Ethan to join as a co-founder. These opportunities came directly from the relationships he built at university. To conclude, the networking opportunities provided by traditional university degrees, through connections with professors and peers, make them a highly valuable choice for anyone looking to build a successful career.
