Concept Testing

Before a company spends time and money to design and introduce a new product, it can be helpful for the company to find out whether consumers will actually want to buy that product. Sometimes a company uses concept testing to try out ideas for new products in advance before spending the money to fully develop those products. In concept testing, a company asks a group of consumers what they think about a product idea—whether the product is something they would be interested in buying (and using). The company also gathers information about specific ways to improve the product, so consumers will be even more interested in buying that product.

Now listen to part of a lecture in a business class. ok so Let's take the example of a bicycle company. This company is thinking about creating a new folding bicycle to sell, a type of bicycle they haven't ever made before. That will fold up into a small, compact size that can be conveniently put into a travel case that people can carry with them when they travel on a train or a bus. Now, the company isn't sure if enough people would be interested enough to buy this new bike. So a person from the company meets with a group of consumers to tell them about it, show them pictures of what it would look like to see what they think. And the consumers really like the idea. Most of them like to ride bikes and they think they would use the new folding bike when they travel. Then the person from the company asks them, if there are any other features, they might want on the bike, and some people say it would be even more convenient if the bike came with an attached lock. So the company manufactures the folding bike and adds the attached lock. and The bike ends up selling very well.

So, they do something called concept testing. They meet with a group of consumers and show them pictures of the bike. The consumers like the idea and say they would use it when they travel. Then, the company asks if there are any other features they would want. Some people say they would like an attached lock. The company adds the lock and the bike sells very well. This shows how concept testing helps companies find out if people will buy a product and how to make it better.

The professor’s lecture provides a clear example of how concept testing works, as described in the reading. Concept testing is a process where a company gathers consumer feedback on a product idea before fully developing it. In the lecture, a bicycle company considers creating a new folding bike but is unsure if there’s enough consumer interest. To test the idea, they meet with a group of potential customers, present the concept, and show them pictures of the bike. The consumers respond positively, indicating they would likely use the bike for travel. Additionally, the company asks for suggestions to improve the product, and some consumers propose adding an attached lock for convenience. The company incorporates this feature, and the bike ultimately sells very well. This example illustrates how concept testing not only helps companies gauge consumer interest but also identifies specific improvements that can enhance the product’s appeal and market success.
