This year I will be adding a new requirement to our world history course. After submitting each of your three essays assigned for the semester, you will need to schedule an appointment to meet with me individually in my office, During these one-on-one meetings, I will return your graded essays and explain the comments I have written on them to you. When we've finished discussing your essay, we can turn our attention to classwork, and you will have a chance to ask questions about anything we've covered in class.
Sincerely,
Professor Carol Boyd
Now listen to a conversation between two students In the class.
Woman: So do you think this will help?
Man: Oh, definitely. I think the requirement is a great idea.
Woman: How's that? Man: Well, you know how, in a new course, you often don't quite understand why you got a certain grade on a paper, especially when the grade is lower than you expected? But you're too embarrassed to ask, because you don't want your professor to think you're complaining.
Woman: Yeah, I usually don't like to ask my professors about my paper grades.
Man: Right. So you don't know what you have to do to improve, but this way, since the meeting is required, well, it won't seem like you're complaining. You're just doing what the professors asked you to do.
Woman: I see what you mean. But what about her other reason?
Man: You know, I think that makes a lot of sense too. Woman: Yeah?
Man: Yeah. Because it's a pretty large class with about 50 students, and the professor has to spend most of her time lecturing, since there's so much material to cover.
Woman: I know. We end up mostly listening to her talk.
Man: Right. So let's say there's something we don't understand about, some historical period, or something we're really interested in and want to know more about, well, in a large class, we don't have the time to ask about these things, but now we will.
The man discusses his opinion of the professor's new requirement. Briefly summarize the requirement. Then state his opinion and explain the reasons he gives for holding that opinion.

The professor now requires individual meetings after each essay. She'll return graded essays, explain her comments, and then students can ask questions about classwork.
The male student strongly supports the professor’s new requirement for individual meetings after each essay.
First, he explains that students often feel confused about their grades—especially if they’re lower than expected—but hesitate to ask questions because they don’t want to seem like they’re complaining. With mandatory meetings, they can openly discuss feedback and learn how to improve without feeling awkward.
Second, he points out that the class is large (around 50 students), leaving little time for questions during lectures. These one-on-one sessions will finally give students a chance to ask about confusing topics or explore historical periods they’re curious about in detail.
In summary, the student believes the policy solves two key problems: unclear grading and limited interaction in a big class.
