Student Exercise Instructors

The university gym offers many group exercise classes, such as aerobics and yoga. These classes are currently taught by professional fitness instructors, but I think the university should consider hiring students as the instructors for these classes. There are many students on campus who enjoy working out and know a lot about exercise, and working as a fitness instructor would be a good way for them to earn extra money. Also, having student instructors would probably increase class attendance, because other students would want to go to classes taught by their friends.
Sincerely,
Joanne Downey

Woman: Did you read Joanne's letter in the paper today?
Man: Yeah, I'm not so sure. It's a great idea.
    Woman: Really?
Man: Yeah. I mean, first of all, she obviously doesn't know that no matter how much you know about exercise, you can't just say, "Okay, I'm a fitness instructor now." You gotta get trained and certified before you can teach.
Woman: Oh, yeah, I didn't think about that.
Man: Yeah, and those certification courses can be really expensive. My sister took one to become a yoga teacher, and it cost her hundreds of dollars. So students would have to spend a lot of money before they could ever start earning any money as an instructor.
Woman: Yeah, that's true. They'd have to teach a lot of classes just to cover the cost of getting certified.
Man: Exactly. And then, even if you do spend all that money and get certified, you're still going to be an inexperienced instructor, and the classes you teach aren't going to be as good as the classes taught by the professionals we have now. They've been doing this for years, and they really know what they're doing. You're not going to get that same quality class from an instructor who just got certified last month.
Man: So yeah, some people probably would go at first to support their friends, but students are very busy, and if the class isn't good, if they feel like it's a waste of their time, they're gonna stop going. So overall, I think the numbers in these classes would actually drop.
    Woman: Yeah, maybe you're right.

The letter proposes that the university hire students as fitness instructors for group exercise classes instead of professionals. The writer believes this would help students earn money and increase class attendance since students might prefer classes taught by their friends.
The man disagrees with this proposal for two reasons. First, he points out that becoming a certified fitness instructor requires expensive training courses, which would cost students hundreds of dollars before they could even start working. Second, he argues that even if students get certified, they would lack experience, so the quality of the classes would be lower than those taught by professional instructors. As a result, attendance might drop because students wouldn’t want to waste time in poorly taught classes.

The letter suggests replacing professional gym instructors with students, arguing that this would provide job opportunities and boost class participation through peer influence.
The man strongly opposes this idea, raising two key objections. First, he emphasizes that fitness instruction requires formal certification, which involves costly training programs—his sister’s yoga certification, for instance, cost hundreds of dollars. This financial burden would offset any potential earnings for student instructors.
Second, he contends that even certified student instructors would lack the expertise of seasoned professionals. Unlike current instructors with years of experience, novice student teachers would deliver subpar classes, ultimately discouraging attendance. While friends might initially support their peers, students would quickly stop attending if the classes proved ineffective. Thus, contrary to the letter’s claim, the man predicts a decline in class enrollment.
