Listen to a conversation between a student and her drama professor. P: So I heard you performed at the campus coffee house on Saturday?S: Yes! I did a dramatic reading of a poem I wrote last year. Some of the other students in our intro to acting class were at the microphone too.P: Good. It's really important to get used to being in front of an audience.S: I know I've wanted to be an actor since I was a little girl. P: Really?S: Yeah! Anyway, after the performances, the other students and I were talking and don't get me wrong, I love your class, we all do. P: Okay...but?S: But we're not really learning much about the business end of acting. Acting techniques and theory are critical of course, but like, how do I find a talent agent? Do I even need one? How do I audition for plays and films? How long should my sample videos be? P: I know, it's a lot.S: So, is there some way to help aspiring actors with the practical stuff?P: Huh, my department does not offer a business of acting course, though, maybe we should. Aside from something like that, though, did you have a specific solution in mind?S: Guest speakers maybe? Working actors who could tell us how they got started?P: I know quite a few local actors. The problem is I've got a lot on my plate this year, but if you'd like to contact the local dramatic society and see if anybody would like to visit, I'm open to that. You could invite them, you know, on my behalf, maybe offer a list of questions or something.S: Sure. Although final exams are coming up, and I'm somehow gonna have to find a new roommate before next month. P: Oh?S: Yeah. I live in an apartment off campus and my current roommate just took a full time job in another state and she JUST let me know.P: Okay. What about next term? You're enrolling in my intermediate acting course, right?S: Definitely! That would give me more time to put something together. Maybe a panel discussion with three or four professional actors and a talent agent, if you know one?P: Huh, this reminds me, are you familiar with an organization called the Acting Connection? S: The Acting Connection?P: It helps young adults who want to enter the profession. I'm pretty sure they offer programs for undergrads. If you can get them to do a workshop on campus, the drama department will pay for it. S: That'd be awesome.P: Sorry I can't organize it myself, but it's my turn to chair the department. In addition to teaching two courses, I'm now overseeing curriculum and hiring and serving as liaison with the Dean, among other things, still wrapping my head around all of this.
