Listen to a conversation between a student and an employee in the student activities office.Employee: Hi, Julie, I haven't talked to you since you had that problem with the homecoming tickets. When was that?Student: Oh, that was a month ago.Employee: And by the way, I saw the university basketball game. I want to congratulate you on helping your team to victory.Student: Thanks, Mr. Smith. I think the credit really should go to our point guard, Tracy Lee, though.Employee: What I saw was a whole team coordinated like a well-oiled machine. You definitely did your part.Student: Thanks. Are you on your way out? I don't wanna hold you up.Employee: Oh, I've got a few minutesStudent: Actually. It's just a quick question. I heard you're the contact person for the new job that's been created, outdoor adventure coordinator, I think it's called?Employee: Yes, we just started applications for that.Student: About how many hours are involved? I'd imagine it's pretty varied with a lot of time spent on trips.Employee: There are some consistent hours on campus. You'd lead one of our fitness classes and each week you'd need to be available for 3, 4 hour shifts in the office. As for the trips themselves, that's not really the major part of the job.Student: Shifts in the office? Oh, I thought, I mean from the title…Employee: That the work is primarily outside? There's some of that, maybe once a month or so. But we need someone to plan outdoor trips for students. You'd be facilitating planning meetings, keeping track of the participants, serving on the funding committee. You'd also oversee the maintenance of equipment for outdoor adventure outings.Student: Oh, I was way off base. I envisioned stuff outdoors. You know, I do a lot of hiking, rock climbing, canoeing.Employee: We do need someone who's familiar with those activities. You certainly could propose outings and even lead them if you wanted to. The fact is there's a lot of planning and organizing to be done.Student: I do have a lot of knowledge I could bring to the table, and I'd love to help other students enjoy the outdoors.Employee: Do you have any first-aid training?Student: Oh, not unless reading logs about people's recovery from sports injuries counts.Employee: If hired, you'd need to get some.Student: But if it's mostly an office job…Employee: It's expected that the coordinator will have training. The community center has a great course in it and the price for students is pretty low.Student: Oh, OK, perfect.Employee: The job posting is available at the university website. Are you headed back to where, the center of campus?Student: Yeah, I need to walk over to the library.Employee: I'm headed in that direction. If you get more questions, you can ask me on the way.
