This week, we discussed the importance of role models and opinion makers in society. One idea we discussed was the widespread impact of “influencers.” Influencers are people who are very active posting on social media and who have many followers. Influencers’ posts and opinions can influence their followers’ choices on everything from fashion to politics. In your opinion, do social media influencers generally have a positive or negative effect on their followers? Why do you think so?

I think the influencers’ effect is generally positive. People can learn about the latest trends and topics in a very quick and efficient wav by following influencers. In the past. people had to spend time looking through magazines or visiting boutiques to even know what was trending.

I think influencers generally have a negative effect because they have far too much influence. l can think of one influencer who only has to mention a particular kind of sports shoe, and the next day they’ll be sold out. The followers aren’t really thinking for themselves; they’re just blindly following the influencers’ choices.

  • From my perspective, I strongly believe that social media influencers have a predominantly positive impact on their followers, a view that aligns with Kelly's. I further argue that influencers often share personal stories, achievements, and experiences, which can inspire and motivate followers to pursue their goals and aspirations. Whether in fitness, entrepreneurship, art, or personal development, influencers can serve as powerful role models.

While Paul highlighted potential negative effects of influencers' excessive influence, leading to followers blindly following choices without critical thinking, he overlooked the diversity within social media. There exists a wide range of influencers catering to various interests and niches, each with varying degrees of influence. Not all followers are easily swayed by every recommendation. Many follow multiple influencers, offering exposure to a variety of perspectives.

In conclusion, influencers have become a significant force in shaping people's lives, with a largely positive impact.
