There are lots of student clubs and organizations on campus-such as the chess club, tennis club, and a cappella singing club-that require students to try out or audition first before they're allowed to join. I think that clubs should eliminate these audition requirements and let anyone who's interested join. Requiring auditions creates a competitive atmosphere and prevents people from having fun, which is the whole point of student clubs in the first place. Also, a lot of students develop lifelong interests through clubs, but not everyone is able to have those opportunities to discover and explore new interests because of the tryouts.
Sincerely,
Sergio Suárez
now listen to two students discussing the letter. Woman: You know, I can understand where Sergio is coming from in that letter. But I think he's wrong.
Man: Really, I mean, I can see his point about the requirements kind of puts a damper on things, doesn't it?
Woman: Well? But for groups that have them, I think it's actually the opposite.
Man: Oh.
Woman: I mean, the requirements are there for a reason. Like, for example, I'm in the chess club, and we travel to other schools and play in tournaments and we want to win.
Man: So people really should have a certain level of expertise.
Woman: Yeah, that's the only way it is fun. It's actually a total downer if we don't stand a chance of winning against the other schools we play.
Man: I hear you, but isn't it? I mean, my mom's a chef, and she always talks about being in the cooking club at university. That's how she first got into cooking. So, I mean, isn't there value in that, letting people try new things? Like Sergio said.
Woman: okay, sure, but does he not realize there's already a bunch of other opportunities, clubs that are open to everyone, the painting club, the Environmental Science Club, I think there's even a ballroom dance club. I don't know so many you want to join. You join, you know?
Man: Well, it's true. They're not all exclusive. Woman: Sure. So lots of opportunities, like your mom had, for inspiration and all you.
The woman expresses her opinion about the proposal described in the letter, briefly summarize the proposal, then state her opinion about the proposal and explain the reason she gives for holding that opinion.

The student suggests that student clubs should eliminate auditions because they create competition, ruin the fun, and also prevent many from discovering lifelong interests.
The woman disagrees with this proposal.
She argues that requirements exist for a reason, using the chess club as an example: members compete in tournaments and need expertise to win, making it fun. Without skill standards, losing repeatedly would be a 'total downer.'
Additionally, the woman argues that there are so many non-exclusive clubs , like painting or ballroom dance already offer open opportunities for exploration, so it would be totally enough for people who want to try something new.
