New Course Limit for First-Year Students

Beginning next year, the university will limit the number of courses first-year students may sign up for to four courses per semester instead of five. Explaining the change, the academic dean, Tina Smith, stated: "We expect the lighter course load to give first-year students time to explore other aspects of student life and to participate in non-academic activities on campus." She added that the new course limit will also give first-year students more time to learn the research skills that are necessary for success in college classes.

Now listen to two students discussing the article.
    Woman: Did you see this?
Man: Yeah, I think it's a good idea. I mean, I kind of wish they'd done something like that my first year, because I had a tough experience.
    Woman: What happened?
Man: Well, my first year, I took five classes, and it was too much. I didn't find time for anything else, so I didn't bother to check out the different student clubs and organizations on campus.
Woman: But you're in clubs now, right?
Man: Yeah, I do a lot of theater, and I'm on the debate team, but none of that started till my second year. So this will be good. Students will have time to explore their options and get involved with other things. And I also agree about the research.
    Woman: What about it?
Man: Well, with this change, I think students will have more time to get better at it, like in my first year, I had little idea how to organize a research paper, library, stuff like that, and I had papers to write for all five of my classes. I hardly knew what to do, and it took a while to understand. I mean, learning how to put together research papers takes some time.
    Woman: Yeah, it does.
Man: And back then, I couldn't find any of the sources I needed at the library, like for one of my papers, I had to look up old newspaper articles, and I'd never done that before, so it took some time to figure out.
Woman: Yeah, I can remember feeling kind of lost, looking for sources too.
Man: And I felt too overwhelmed with all those assignments to really slow good job of learning how to do all that. But with this change, students should have more time to get better at it.
