    Let's look at another form of planned behavior shedding. Some plants shed, drop some of their parts. The parts that plants commonly drop are leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruits. And for many plant species, this behaviour shedding benefits them in several ways. Let's look at some good effects that shedding has for plants. First, shedding can prevent damage to plants. Take the maple tree, for example, it grows in climates where it's cold and snow falls during part of the year. At the approach of the cold season, the maple tree begins to shed its leaves, begin to fall to the ground. How does this prevent damage to the maple tree? If the leaves remained on the tree, snow would fall on them and turn into ice. And the snow and ice would continue to build up throughout the season. Under the weight of all the snow and ice, the branches would begin to break and cause damage to the tree. By shedding its leaves, the tree avoids this kind of damage. Now, other plants benefit in a different way from shedding their parts. They are able to conserve nutrients. The avocado tree is a good example of a plant that benefits in its way from shedding. The avocado usually produces large numbers of young fruit, and the young fruit needs lots of nutrients to grow and develop into mature fruit. But since the avocado tree produces much more fruit than it can nourish to maturity, what it does is to shed some of its fruit, allowing some of it to fall to the ground. The tree no longer has to nourish the fallen fruit, and it can save enough nutrients to let the remaining fruit develop into maturity
