Goal Succession
Organizations or groups are often created to achieve a particular aim or goal that will benefit the public. However, when an organization eventually accomplishes its original goal, it might no longer have a reason to exist; it could, however, begin to focus on a new goal. This is known as goal succession. The new goal is generally connected to the previous goal, so certain systems and resources that are already in place can be used. Therefore, through goal succession, the organization or group can continue to work toward a useful goal.

Okay, so here's an example. In the town where I grew up, there were a lot of people who were concerned about improving conditions in the town, and they decided that what they'd focus on was improving this park that was in the town. The park wasn't very clean, and there weren't very many flowers growing in it, so it didn't look great, and people didn't really want to spend time there. So they got permission from the local government and formed a committee to improve the park. The committee raised some money for supplies and got some volunteers together, and every weekend, they'd go and plant flowers and trees in the park and pick up trash and repaint the fences around it. And after a few months, the park was looking really good. There wasn't really much more to do to improve it. So now the committee had some money left and all these volunteers who wanted to keep helping. So they didn't just want to stop working, even though the park was looking good. And at this point, they knew quite a bit about parks, so they decided the next thing they wanted to do was build a new park in the town, another park in a different area of the town that didn't have one. So the volunteers started making plans to turn an empty plot of land into a new park.
