Open Source Development
Many companies restrict access to the designs of their products in order to protect them from their competitors, so that those companies do not copy their products. Sometimes, however, companies may encourage all interested people to access and modify their designs, even if these people are from a competing company. This model of development, allows companies to work together cooperatively to improve products. This model can be beneficial when products require new technology that is expensive and complex, since companies can share costs and work together to find solutions to problems in order to create successful products.

So, there's a small car company that did this recently. It makes these uh electric cars, cars that don't use gasoline but run on batteries instead. When the company was just a few years old, it was struggling. It wasn't selling very many of these cars. Why?[br/] Well, the cars were incredibly expensive to make and to be honest, they didn't work very well. Electric cars require batteries that are both lightweight and able to hold a lot of electricity. And the time batteries like that didn't really exist. So, the company had research and spend a lot of money trying to design them. So, the cars weren't very efficient at first, and the cost of trying to make them more efficient got added to the price of the cars.[br/] Well, this company decided to do an unusual thing. They announced that they would make the designs for their batteries available to other car companies. And instead of being bad for the company, it turned out very well. The other companies had some good ideas about ways to make the batteries cheaper and more efficient. All of the companies started selling cars with the improved batteries. And since the cars were better designed and less expensive overall, all of the companies sold more electric cars than ever before.
