Listen to a conversation between a student cafeteria worker and the food service's manager.M: Lucas, would you help out in the kitchen this morning? At least until breakfast begins, they're short staff today.S: Okay, but I haven't finished restocking the pantry yet.M: That can wait. And by the way, how are your new hours working out?S: Good. They're perfect for my class schedule.M: Glad we could accommodate your request. We didn't want to lose you. Everyone speaks so highly of you, even chef Garcia, and he's not easy to please.S: Oh I enjoy working with him. He was a real help when I started. He really keeps things running smoothly. Actually, I haven't seen him for a while. Is he all right?M: He's fine. He's visiting family. He'll be back next week.S: That's good. I wanted to ask him about the soft serve ice cream machine. Do you know? Is it gone for good?M: Well, I'm in charge of that machine. It couldn't be repaired, but a replacement will arrive within a few days.S: Oh...
M: I thought you'd be happy to hear that.S: Well, It's just that for myself and the people I've talked to, most of us prefer the natural scooped hard ice cream we've been serving in the meantime.M: The hard scooped ice cream is only temporary until the new machine gets installed. Plus, who can resist that smooth creamy ice cream that flows right into the cone?S: In my experience, most people prefer natural, healthier products like the Nottingham brand of hard ice cream that we're offering right now.M: I don't know about healthier, nutritionally hard ice cream is pretty comparable to soft serve. Though I suppose it depends on the brand. I do agree that Nottingham's is pretty tasty.S: The only ingredients that Nottingham's puts in my favorite flavor are cream, sugar, milk, and Belgian chocolate. There's no thickener or preservatives. It makes a huge difference.M: Hum...
S: In contrast, the cafeteria soft serve contains up to 17 ingredients, depending on the flavor I checked. Most are unrecognizable artificial additives with names so long, I can't even pronounce them.M: Looks like you've done your homework.S: I guess I'm just asking you to reconsider. I'm sure that more students would buy ice cream here if it had no artificial ingredients. But if we must stick with soft serve, could you fill the machine with a healthier brand?M: I'll give it some thought. Thanks for the input.S: Thank you. I'll go pop over to the kitchen before the crowd comes in for breakfast.
