S: "OK, but, um, I'm wondering being a global student ambassador. I'm taking five classes this term, and I'm also a Japanese language tutor. Some weeks, there isn't much tutoring going on. But when students are preparing for a test or a quiz, I have to spend a lot more time with them. I'm just worried I might not have enough time for the ambassador work if I take it on."

A: "I see. Here, we ask that you give us at least three or 4 hours a month. And we do try to be flexible."

Listen to a conversation between a student and an administrator in the Study Abroad office.

S: Hi, I'm Carlos Ramirez.A: Yes, come in. Are you interested in studying abroad?S: I already studied abroad last spring in Japan. It was fantastic. I guess that's why I got that email about being a global student ambassador?A: Oh right. We are recruiting students like you to answer questions and provide guidance to students who are thinking about studying abroad next year and those who are already arranging to do so. Our ambassadors shared their experiences with them, what they liked about it, what they might have done differently, any tips they could give.S: I'd love the chance to do that, telling other students what it's like living in another culture. My experience in Japan was totally life-changing, and it might give my friends a break from hearing me talk about it nonstop.A: Great. I'm sure you'd be an inspiration to others. All you need to do is fill out an application online, and...S: OK, but, um, I'm wondering being a global student ambassador. I'm taking five classes this term, and I'm also a Japanese language tutor. Some weeks, there isn't much tutoring going on. But when students are preparing for a test or a quiz...A: I see. Here, we ask that you give us at least three or 4 hours a month. And we do try to be flexible.S: Oh, in that case, I could probably make it work. What would I be doing? Exactly?A: We do two or three events a year to promote the program. You could help organize panel discussions, coffee hours, slide shows. There's room for creativity.S: Awesome. I've got some gorgeous photos.A: So then you might give us a slide show presentation and a speech in the auditorium at the student center. We could advertise it around campus.S: Oh, I think I prefer one on one or small group presentations, standing up in front of a big audience. Uh, I mean, I'm a pretty sociable guy, but...A: Oh, don't worry, we give lots of support. As a student ambassador, you're already qualified, but we'll make sure you're confident enough to address any size group. It's all part of the skills training that we offer. Being an ambassador also looks great on a resume.S: OK, when does that training take place?A: All new ambassadors are asked to attend a Saturday afternoon training session. After that, we do ask for a year's commitment.S: Hmm, I am interested. But before applying, could I meet a current ambassador, you know, to get their perspective?A: Sure, I'll put you in touch with someone.
