1 .<-NARRATOR:-> Listen to a conversation between two students.
1 .<-MALE STUDENT:-> [w noticeable lack of enthusiasm] Hey, Sally-I just got the first draft of my research paper back from Professor Stone.
1 .<-FEMALE STUDENT:-> Just now? I got mine back a few days ago.
1 .<-MALE STUDENT:-> Yeah. Everyone else in the class that I know of got theirs a few days ago too.
1 .<-FEMALE STUDENT:-> [worried tone] But the deadline-you're running out of time.
1 .<-MALE STUDENT:-> Yeah. I'm worried.
2 .I only have one day to review all his comments and write my final draft.
3 .He made a lot of suggestions.
1 .<-FEMALE STUDENT:-> You should definitely ask Professor Stone for a deadline extension.
2 .He should take some responsibility for the situation. It is sort of his fault you won't have much time to work on it before the due date.
1 .<-MALE STUDENT:-> I've thought about that. But...
2 .would he think I was being pushy, or criticizing him for not getting the paper back to me right away?
3 .[sigh] I don't want to offend him.
1 .<-FEMALE STUDENT:-> True, but it's your grade we're talking about.
2 .You've got a legitimate concern.
3 .But it's understandable if you're uncomfortable asking.
1 .<-MALE STUDENT:-> Yeah, I'm in a tough spot.
1 .<-FEMALE STUDENT:-> You know, you could always just do your best with the time you have left.
2 .You're a good student;
3 .I bet you can finish it quickly-work really fast-and it'll still turn out good.
1 .<-MALE STUDENT:-> [musing] Do my best with the time I have left...
2 .Well, if I worked really hard, I imagine I might do OK. But
3 .I'd have to be sure to deal with all his comments.
4 .I need a good grade.
