Paul presents a compelling argument about emphasizing that the worker would be pushed to work continuously. Admittedly, nowadays, our economic system is competitive to some extent. However, considering the high advanced technology in the future, I am inclined to prioritize the more leisure time in the future. From my viewpoint, with more and more effective high-tech products, the productivity of society would increase extremely seceral decades later. In other words, due to the appearing of some inventions, such as artifical intelligence and auto-driving vehicles, a small number of clients could achieve a deal of results, whcich could make employees to own more leisure time. For instance, according to the news, the appearence of Chat-GPT let clients to reduce the pressure of writing essays and have more spare time.

Doctor Achebe

In 1930, a famous economist predicted that at the end of the twentieth century, an average worker would work only 15 hours a week, thanks to advances in technology. This did not happen, as we all know. Nonetheless. the balance between work time and free time remains an interesting question. So, let me ask you today: Twenty years in the future, will people have more leisure time (free time) and less work than they have today? Why, or why not?

Claire

I think it is likely that people will work shorter hours in twenty years than they do today. Our societies are becoming wealthier all the time. It does not seem necessary for people to continue working as hard as they do today. At some point. having more free time should be more important than creating more wealth.

Paul

I am not sure people will work less in the future. As Doctor Achebe wrote, a shortening of the workweek was predicted before. There are many factors that determine how long people work. Our economic system is very competitive. Workers are pushed to work longer and longer hours so that companies have a competitive advantage.

  • From my perspective, I am convinced that people will work shorter hours and enjoy more leisure time in the future than they currently do, a view that is in harmony with Andrew's notion. I also contend that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of remote work and flexible work arrangements. This transition has not only demonstrated the feasibility of working from home but has also brought to light the potential advantages, such as decreased commute times and greater flexibility. Looking forward, it is anticipated that technological and connectivity advancements over the next two decades will further facilitate remote work and alternative working models. Consequently, individuals will have the chance to benefit from shorter work hours while sustaining productivity, thereby gaining more leisure time.

While Claire pointed out that the quest for a competitive edge often compels individuals to work longer hours, she overlooked the fact that excessively prolonged work periods can result in burnout, diminished productivity, and adverse health effects. Employers and organizations are becoming increasingly aware of the significance of employee well-being and the necessity for a balanced work-life equation. In reaction, some companies are adopting measures such as flexible working schedules, reduced workweeks, and compressed work schedules to enhance efficiency and employee contentment.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that there will be a future reduction in working hours for many individuals.
