This week, we’ll be discussing ways to address air pollution. One idea is introducing environmental taxes on air travel. Such taxes, also referred to as ecological taxes or green taxes, are extra charges that get added to the price of airplane tickets. Money collected from these taxes could be invested in environmentally friendly technologies or in promoting other cleaner modes of transportation. Do you think there should be an environmental tax on air travel? Why or why not?

We should impose environmental taxes on air travel. These taxes might encourage people to find cheaper, more eco-friendly ways to get places. In my country, many people use planes to fly a short distance because flights are relatively cheap, when they could just as easily take a less polluting form of transportation.

Additional taxes on air travel will do little to solve the problem of air pollution. Airplane tickets would become more expensive, punishing passengers without incentivizing airlines to become more environmentally friendly. The airlines should pay the price to protect the environment, not their customers.

  • From my perspective, imposing environmental taxes on air travel could be an effective method to address air pollution. This concept aligns with Andrew's notion that additional financial burdens might encourage people to choose more economical and eco-friendly travel options. I'd also argue that the revenue from such taxes could help subsidize and improve public transportation systems. Enhancing the efficiency, reach, and eco-friendliness of public transit can make it a more attractive and feasible option for travelers, reducing dependence on air travel and private vehicles, which have greater environmental impacts.

While Claire has noted that increased taxes could penalize travelers without necessarily encouraging airlines to adopt greener practices, she may have overlooked the potential for higher ticket prices to discourage non-essential flights, particularly over shorter distances. A decrease in demand could prompt airlines to re-evaluate certain routes and incentivize them to invest in more fuel-efficient aircraft or concentrate on longer, more vital flights.

In summary, implementing environmental taxes on air travel might be a powerful approach to combating air pollution.
