As I mentioned in class, workplaces can sometimes present us with some really difficult situations. Many emerge out of interpersonal relationships between coworkers. If, for example, one employee has made a mistake at work and asks a coworker not to tell anyone about it, the question arises as to what the coworker should do. Some would keep their colleague's mistake a secret, while others would report it to management. Which of these two approaches do you think is the best course of action? Why?

Personally, I believe keeping the secret is ultimately best. If there is trust between coworkers, then a company is bound to thrive. When coworkers report one another's wrongdoing, it only creates a workplace culture defined by mistrust and suspicion. This atmosphere, in the end, is not good for interpersonal relationships or even for business.

Reporting the mistake to management is the best course of action here. Mistakes have a better chance of being corrected when more senior leadership gets involved. Since even small mistakes can cause companies to lose money, it's definitely better to report the mistake so that it can be fixed quickly.

  • In my view, reporting the mistake to management is the best course of action, but with a focus on transparency and collaboration, rather than punishment. While it might be tempting to keep the mistake a secret out of loyalty to a coworker, addressing issues openly can actually strengthen trust and accountability in the long run. When mistakes are hidden, they have the potential to grow into larger problems that can harm the entire team or company, even if they seem small at first.

For example, if an inventory calculation error goes unnoticed and unreported, it could lead to larger stock discrepancies over time, potentially affecting the company’s performance. Reporting the mistake promptly allows management to address it before it escalates, while also providing the coworker with an opportunity to correct the issue and learn from it. It is important to recognize that reporting a mistake is not about getting someone into trouble, but about preventing future issues and ensuring the team's success.
