In the United States, new, inexperienced schoolteachers (novice teachers) currently receive only one semester of training by experienced schoolteachers in an actual classroom. After this, the novice schoolteacher begins teaching independently, with minimal supervision. However, there are proposals to change this system and provide novice teachers with much more extensive classroom training. According to the proposals, novice teachers would spend up to three years in special teacher training schools. In these schools, novice teachers would teach children while being supervised by expert teachers. They would also have opportunities to interact with other novice teachers. However, opponents point out several issues with the proposed system. Loss of interest in a teaching career First, this proposal could decrease the number of people who want to become teachers. The new system would require novice teachers to complete three extra years of training before they can be hired. When people realize how long it will take to become a schoolteacher, fewer of them will want to begin an education degree. The United States already has a shortage of teachers, and this system would make the situation worse. Uneven level of training at different schools Critics also point out that novice teachers would be sent to many different teacher training schools. Each training school would be staffed by different expert teachers. This means that novice teachers might receive better training in some schools than in others. Novice teachers leaving some training schools would be better prepared to teach independently than novice teachers leaving other schools. Concerns of parents Finally, parents might worry that if their children are enrolled as students at these training schools, it will put the children at a disadvantage. It could be difficult to convince parents to enroll their children in schools with so many inexperienced schoolteachers. The parents may fear that the quality of such schools is questionable.

Now listen to part of a lecture on the topic you just read about. Despite what the reading claimed about the potential problems with teacher training schools, the benefits could actually far outweigh the drawbacks. First, the new system would actually increase the number of school teachers. The extra training will not discourage new school teachers, because in the proposed training schools, they would be paid as regular employees. So even though they have to wait to receive their own classroom, they would still earn full pay right away, plus they would be better prepared, which is important, because under the current system, 10% of teachers quit after a single year of working because they feel unprepared. The new system would increase their preparation and keep them in schools. Second, even though novice teachers in the new system would end up in different training schools, the current decentralized system splits novice teachers up even more. You see in the current teacher education system, a single American University can send novice teachers to over 300 or more different schools, often placing a single novice teacher at each school, that results in a really uneven training. In fact, the proposed new system of teacher training schools would centralize training much more than it currently is, since several novice teachers would end up at the same training school and have the same training experience. In addition with several novice teachers at each school, novice teachers would be able to learn from each other, not just from expert teachers. Finally, children who attend training schools would not be at a disadvantage. The regular staff at these training schools would be experienced teachers. In fact, novice teachers would be added to the current staff. This means that, because there are more teachers in total at the school. Children at these training schools get more individualized attention from teachers than in other schools, and research shows that when there are more opportunities for children to get individualized attention from teachers, children learn better in.

  • The reading lists several concerns about extending the training period for novice teachers in the United States to three years, while the lecture argues that the benefits of the proposed system would outweigh the drawbacks.

First, the reading claims that requiring three extra years of training would discourage people from becoming teachers, worsening the current teacher shortage. In contrast, the lecture explains that the new system would actually increase the number of teachers. The lecture clarifies that novice teachers in the new system would receive full salaries during their extended training, making the longer preparation period less of a burden. Furthermore, the lecture notes that the increased preparation would reduce the number of teachers who quit after their first year due to feeling unprepared.

Second, the reading argues that training quality might vary across different teacher training schools, leading to inconsistent preparation for novice teachers. However, the lecture counters that the current system already creates an even more decentralized training experience, as novice teachers are spread across hundreds of different schools with no opportunity to interact with other novices. The proposed system would centralize the training by grouping novice teachers in fewer schools, allowing them to learn not only from expert teachers but also from each other, thus improving the overall consistency of training.

Finally, the reading suggests that parents might be hesitant to enroll their children in schools where inexperienced novice teachers are practicing, fearing that the quality of education might be lower. The lecture refutes this concern by explaining that the training schools would still have regular staff consisting of experienced teachers, and novice teachers would be added to this staff. With more teachers available, students in these schools would receive more individualized attention, which research shows leads to better learning outcomes.
