Circannual Rhythm

Many organisms go through biological processes or changes that occur at regular intervals When this change or process occurs at a regular time annually-once a year-the animal is said to exhibit a circannual rhythm. Scientists believe that circannual rhythms may have evolved to allow organisms to begin making necessary physical adjustments in order to survive seasonal changes. Although a circannual rhythm is often linked with season changes in the environment, the process is actually initiated from within the organism and will occur even in the absence of environmental cues.
