Change Language Course Requirement

The university currently requires all students to take one year of a foreign language, with the goal of exposing students to other cultures and broadening our horizons. However, language courses often meet every day and generally have a heavy workload. I think the university should give students the option to fulfill this requirement by taking a culture or history class about a certain country or region. These classes generally meet only 2 or 3 times a week, so the work would be more manageable. Also, students would still get the educational benefits of learning about another culture from a culture or history class, even though these classes are taught in English. Sincerely, Lisa Honig
