New Requirement for Engineering Students

Fourth-year engineering students must complete a final project that involves designing an original invention or new, innovative product. Starting this year, these students will also be required to present their projects at an "Engineering Day" event. "This event will give engineering students an opportunity to explain and share their projects with a variety of people-a good skill to have for future jobs," says Dean of Engineering, Jean Walters. Additionally, at the event the engineering faculty will award a cash prize to the student with the top project; the winner will be expected to use the award to develop a fully functional version of the new invention.

Now listen to two students discussing the article. Man: Hey, Amy, I just read that article about your department. What do you think about the new requirement?
Woman: Well, I think it's basically a good idea, though maybe not all the details, but I do think it'd be great to have a chance to show my work to more people.
Man: Yeah, that'd be cool. I don't even know what you're working on.
Woman: Well, it's kind of complicated, but that's actually why I think this would be so good. You know, I mostly just talk about it with my professors and other students in my department, and we obviously use technical terms that an outsider probably wouldn't understand.
    Man: Right? I'm sure I wouldn't.
Woman: Yeah, so I feel like this would be a good chance to practice explaining my ideas to a wider audience, not even just friends and family, but also potential employers or investors.
Man: Investors? Woman: Well, sure, eventually I'll probably need to explain my ideas to, like, business leaders or investors, people who might be interested in my work but don't have technical experience.
Man: Oh, that makes sense. I guess if investors don't understand an idea, they're not going to support it. So you think you've got a chance at winning?
Woman: I don't know. I hope so, though even if I do, I'm not exactly thrilled about how that's going to work.
Man: What bothers you about it?
Woman: Well, I just think the winners should have the option of using the prize for whatever they want. Maybe they could put it toward graduate school. That would be just as important.
Man: Yeah, that's a good point.
