Throughout history, humans have developed ideas and behaviors which have enabled them to accomplish things that were previously thought to be impossible. However, as human societies continue to advance, their own innovations or efforts to make progress can sometimes give rise to new problems that have no clear or easy solution. This is known as the progress trap. It may occur when groups of people take actions that bring short-term benefits or gains, but have negative long-term consequences. These consequences often cannot easily be reversed.
Explain how the example from the lecture illustrates the concept of a progress trap.
