1 .S: Oh, before we start, didn't I see you at the concert last night, the one the music department hosted?

4 .P: I was so impressed with the way the pianist and the orchestra sounded together. Did you know the pianist actually recorded a couple of CDs here at the university?

8 .P: Oh, OK, yes. Whether or not you should take it？

9 .S: Actually not whether to take it, but whether to register for it using the pass/no credit option. I've never taken a course pass/no credit before, so I'm not sure how that works.

10 .P: Well, you won't get a letter grade, like you do in most courses. S: OK.

11 .P: Your final grade is either pass or no credit. If you pass, you get credit for the course. If you don't pass, you don't get credit. Either way, your grade's not calculated into your cumulative grade point average.

12 .S: So registering with the pass/no credit option is maybe a good idea if I'm not sure I'll do well in the course.

13 .P: Yes, but if you think you can do well, a letter grade should help raise your overall grade average. You're an engineering major, I believe. S: Yes.

14 .P: Well, this fundamentals course was designed for music majors. In fact, it's a required course for music majors.

19 .S: But, I mean, I'm just looking to pass the class because it's a prerequisite for an electronic music course I'm interested in.

20 .P: Oh, which course is that? S: It's called Sound Synthesis and Sampling. It's about digital music using computer software and synthesizers, electronic keyboards, blending different sounds to create new compositions.

21 .P: Oh yeah, you would have to take fundamentals first, but from what you said, you don't seem to consider yourself a musician?

22 .S: Right! Actually, I'm an acoustical engineering major. Most acoustical engineers work with noise control, like in buildings, but I'm also into creating and manipulating sound, like in a recording studio. So about the fundamentals class, I'm thinking maybe I should speak to the professor who's teaching the course.

23 .P: You can certainly do that. Um, Professor Warren's teaching it next semester. S: OK, great. Thank you. P: By the way, there's another concert coming up next month, downtown at the Civic Center. I don't know if it will be as good as last night, but... S: Oh, don't worry. I already have tickets.
