### 第1段

1 .Listen to part of a conversation between a student and a professor.

### 第2段

1 .Uh, excuse me, Professor.

2 .I wanted to talk to you about the paper due next Friday.

3 .I'm having some trouble finding enough information on the seasonal migration of the Alaskan Bar-tailed Godwits.

### 第3段

1 .Ah, the Godwit, a fascinating species, yet a bit obscure I believe.

2 .There haven't been many studies on that particular bird though I do love the long brown bill.

3 .Did you know the Bar-tailed Godwit is the holder of the longest nonstop flight known for any bird,

4 .6,835 miles from Alaska to New Zealand?

5 .Isn't that fascinating?

### 第4段

1 .Of course, Professor.

2 .I was able to find that fact.

3 .Actually, it is stated in most of the resources I looked at.

4 .Unfortunately, it was about the only fact I was able to find on the Bar-tailed Godwit.

### 第5段

1 .I see. Well, I thought it would be a little difficult researching the Godwit,

2 .but not that hard.

### 第6段

1 .Well, yes it is, which is why I'm so concerned.

2 .The minimum length of the paper is,

3 .as you, uh, know, eight pages typed.

4 .I don't think I'll be able to find enough information for that length of a paper. I mean,

5 .I could probably stretch it to half that right now,

6 .but that would be pushing it.

### 第7段

1 .Yes, I see your dilemma.

2 .Please understand that I did not intentionally want to put you in any distress.

3 .Please remind me when this paper is due.

### 第8段

1 .It is due next Friday, sir.

### 第9段

1 .Next Friday, hmm, I see.

2 .That gives you roughly one week to complete it, correct?

### 第10段

1 .That's correct, sir. I'm really starting to panic because I have a number of other papers due next week,

2 .and then with finals the week after that,

3 .I'm worrying if I'm going to be able to put my best effort into this paper.

4 .And now I can't seem to find any info on the bird.

### 第11段

1 .Well, I have an idea.

2 .Would you feel comfortable changing your topic this late in the game?

3 .I could assign you a more research friendly topic, and you could get to work on that.

4 .What do you, uh, think?

### 第12段

1 .That might be a good idea as long as it isn't as obscure as the migrational habits of the Alaskan Godwit, Professor.

2 .What do you think would be a good topic?

### 第13段

1 .Now, let's see.

2 .How about the cuckoos, which are genuine long distance migratory birds in the tropics?

3 .There's been tons written on them, of course, and I doubt you'll have any trouble finding enough stuff on them.

### 第14段

1 .The cuckoo, huh? I'll be the laughing stock of our seminar.

2 .Can't you assign a bird with a better intellectual reputation than the cuckoo?

### 第15段

1 .I do beg to differ. The cuckoo is a bird of impeccable intelligence.

2 .How most laymen think of the cuckoo as a silly, stupid bird is a misnomer!

### 第16段

1 .Please, Professor! Can't you give me something different?

### 第17段

1 .Oh, all right. Let's see here. Um, no, well, uh,

2 .how about the Pink-footed Goose? If I recall correctly, they migrate each year from Iceland to England.

3 .One of my colleagues has written four books on them,

4 .which I can let you borrow.

### 第18段

1 .The Pink-footed Goose sounds perfect, Professor!

2 .And that would be wonderful if I could borrow those texts from you.

3 .I promise that I'll take excellent care of them and will return them just as they were.

### 第19段

1 .I have the utmost trust in you.

### 第20段

1 .Thank you, thank you, Professor. You've been very accommodating and patient with me, and I appreciate that.

2 .Most professors wouldn't have gone out of their way just for one student like you have. Thanks!

### 第21段

1 .Oh, don't mention it. I know you guys are under a lot of pressure these days with all the new academic requirements,

2 .and it is the least I can do to help you out once in a while when I can.

3 .Now, why don't you get out of here and start to work on that paper?

4 .I'm really looking forward to, uh,
