第1段

1 .Listen to a conversation between a student and an employee in the biology department.

1 .Student: Hi, I'm looking for Dr James. Is he here?

2 .Employee: No, he's at lunch. Can I help you?

3 .Student:: I don't know. I was told to talk to Dr James. He's in charge of all of the research projects done with fish, right?

4 .Employee: He supervises the fisheries laboratory, but he's not involved with every research project that's being done there. He studies sharks, mostly.

5 .Student: Oh, well, then maybe he's not the right person. I want to do this study on shellfish, um, the composition of the shells of different species. So I was hoping to get a job in the lab so that I could do some hands-on research. Is there someone I should talk to who specializes in shellfish?

6 .Employee: Well, actually, you'll need to see Dr James, because he makes all personnel decisions at the lab. But if you're looking for a paying job, those have already been filled by work-study students, students who get financial aid from the university. Of course, if you're willing to take a volunteer job, maybe you could do some maintenance on the tanks or feed the fish in return for access to the lab. I know he's made arrangements like that with students before, but you'll have to talk to him.

7 .Student: Okay, I'm a chemistry major, and if I can do this shellfish project, I can use it to fulfill my biochemistry requirement. Otherwise, I'll have to take a bio-chem class next semester, and I'd really rather take something else, but the chemistry department, well, no fish tanks over there. So that's why I'm here. So you think there might be an opening to feed the fish? Employee: It's on the weekends. It's not the best hours. You have to come in at seven on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

8 .Student: Seven o'clock. Wow, that's early for me. Is there anything else?

9 .Employee: Well, we do need someone to clean out the tanks weekly. Of course, that's harder work, but you can come in whenever you want.

10 .Student: Now, there's a difficult choice. I guess I'd rather get up early.

11 .Employee: While you're here, why don't you fill out a job application? We have everyone do that, even volunteers, and Dr James will probably be back by the time you're finished. Student: Okay.

12 .Employee: You know something? Do you have to do your research on shellfish?

13 .Student: I don't have to, but I'm kind of excited about it, and I know the department likes it when we come up with new ideas for research topics. Why?

14 .Employee: Well, Dr James has really been pushing for an expansion of the lab, so the university may give us extra funding for more tanks and more fish, so that we can become kind of a center for marine life studies. But since Dr James is an expert on sharks, I'm guessing that most of the new fish will be those species, and that there might be more research positions working with them, maybe even some paying ones. Student: Well, that's good to know.
